“Ophthalmos” is the first ophthalmological center created in Greece in 1985. Today it is one of the largest Ophthalmological Centers in the country. It was founded by the internationally renowned Professor Spyros Georgaras. Its history goes hand in hand with the development of Ophthalmology in our country since the 1980s.
The experience and skill of our scientific staff as well as the use of the most modern diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical methods lead to the accurate diagnosis and effective recovery of our patients.
Our team collaborates with the ophthalmology department of the hospital “YGEIA”, where Professor Spyros Georgaras is the director of the ophthalmology clinic, with the ophthalmology department of the hospital “METROPOLITAN”, of which he is honorary director since 2016, as well as with the hospital “METERRA”.
At the same time, we operate a state-of-the-art day-care unit at our premises in Glyfada. “Ophthalmos” is the only ophthalmology center that ensures its patients with exclusive use of our unit by physicians of its center.
Thus, today, based on the continuous training and specialization of our scientific staff, constantly investing in state-of-the-art machinery and equipment, strengthening our scientific network of collaborations and actively participating internationally in the development and progress of ophthalmological science and art, we are in a unique position to ensure that we offer the best possible treatment of all ophthalmological diseases, even those considered extremely rare and difficult to treat in a specialized way.
Our Centre From the ’80s to today
In 1980, Professor Sp. Georgaras applies for the first time in Greece the modern procedure of phacoemulsification for cataracts, and in 1983, he is awarded by the inventor of the technique, Academician S. Fyodorov, as the first surgeon in Europe to apply his method for the correction of myopia.
From these two areas, modern surgery in ophthalmology essentially begins, which the professor spread to the wider world as the first founding member of the Hellenic Society of Endoscopic and Refractive Surgery, the largest scientific and professional association of surgeons in Greece.
The aim of the Society now and then is to educate Greek ophthalmologists in modern cataract surgery, transplantation and refractive surgery (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, presbyopia).
Since the establishment of the Institute until today, the goal remains the successful diagnosis and the most appropriate and advanced treatment of our patients’ eye diseases.
This effort includes the continuous and detailed information about their condition, about alternative treatments, applying the most advanced techniques and methods in the field of ophthalmology, as well as about any consequences.
Also all the services we offer are supported by our qualified, experienced and friendly staff, who can advise you on examinations, surgical procedures, coverage by private and public insurance, as well as other issues related to your visit.
