Dimitrios Balafoutas was born in 1979 and grew up in Athens. He studied Medicine at the University of Athens. After serving in the Air Force, he moved in 2007 to the University Hospital of Freiburg in Germany, one of the leading training centres for Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Europe, where he completed his entire training, obtaining his specialty title in 2013 and was immediately appointed as an attending physician at the same hospital, where he remained until 2015.

He continued his career at the University Hospital of Würzburg, where he was elected Deputy Chief Physician in 2016 and Chief Physician (Oberarzt) in 2017, a position he held until the end of 2020.

Dimitrios Balafoutas specialised in Gynaecological Oncology and Minimally Invasive Surgery at the University Hospitals of Freiburg and Würzburg, as well as in Robotic Surgery at the University Hospital of Würzburg. In this hospital he directed the Department of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology, and the special clinic for the treatment of uterine fibroids.

Dimitrios Balafoutas is a Doctor of the University of Athens and an Academic Fellow of the 2nd University Obstetrics and Gynaecology Clinic at the Aretaio Hospital.
