La casa di giorgino
The Latin poet Virgil, apart from the Aignada, has passed down to our days that the Latins and Greeks made a kind of unleavened pie which was baked on ceramic fired trays and eaten with raw onion, oil and vinegar. Yeast and dough rising is the next step, combined with the invention of the oven, make “pizza” a quick, affordable and delicious treat.
We will have to wait until 1830 to find the first pizzeria, as until then pizza was sold on the street in stalls called “port’ alba” in the city of Naples. In the summer of 1889, King Hubert I and Queen Margaret were on holiday at the Capodimonte Palace in Naples.
With the reputation of pizza having spread throughout the city, it wasn’t long before it reached the royal court.
The Queen’s great curiosity to taste this new delicacy led her to call the most famous pizzaiolo of his time, Don Raffaele Esposito, to the palace. Don Raffaele, with the help of his wife Donna Rosa, presented the queen with three different pizzas, one of them in the colours of the Italian flag (tomato, basil, mozzarella), which delighted the queen. The scintillating Esposito instantly combined these new ingredients and christened the pizza “Margarita”.
In the trattoria “la casa di giorgino” you can taste authentic Italian pizza with fresh dough, fresh Italian mozzarella, a variety of cold cuts, cheeses, appetizers from northern and southern Italy, fresh pasta made in-house by chef Giorgino, fresh seafood, many dishes of the day (crab, lobster, chanterelles) and of course branded Italian and Greek wines. The chef creates for you various liqueurs and aperitifs (lemon cello, grappa frutti disseccati, melograno etc.)
